Toyota SA is preparing to entrust the Prado Land Cruiser with a 2.8-liter turbodiesel engine.
Toyota South Africa Motors has confirmed its intention to soon offer the Prado Land Cruiser with the 2.8-liter turbodiesel that debuted in the Hilux.
The local branch of the Japanese firm has confirmed CARmag.co.za At the launch of the Lexus RC F by the SA, it is expected that the range of engines of the Prado will be modified before the end of 2019.
We expect the four-cylinder oil burner – which, of course, will also be used locally in the Fortuner range – to replace the 3.0-liter unit that currently powers three of the five variants of the Prado range.
Although local engine specifications have not yet been revealed, it should be noted that in Australia, the 2.8 D-4D powertrain available in the Prado has a power output of 130 kW at 3,400 rpm, a dozen installations out of the 3.0 liters outgoing. engine. Connected to a six-speed automatic transmission, the 2.8-liter crusher generates 450 Nm between 1,600 and 2,400 rpm (up to 50 Nm maximum from the old engine).
This is sufficient for a braked towing capacity of 3,000 kg and a combined fuel consumption of 8.0 L / 100 km. Toyota Australia also offers the engine in conjunction with a six-speed manual transmission (and a slightly lower torque of 420 Nm), but this combination does not seem to be part of the reinvigorated South African lineup.
The current seven-seat Prado range in South Africa – which was updated locally in November 2017 – also includes the Japanese company's 4.0-liter V6 petrol engine, which propels two variants.
