According to the former President, the role played by members of the badembly in the local governance structure, particularly in ensuring the accountability of the bademblies, was serious and therefore should not be considered a voluntary service.
"Members of the Assembly should receive an allowance. This allocation does not allow them to solve problems, but is an acknowledgment of their efforts.
Even though we expect them to make a lot of sacrifices, their work is very serious and hectic and should not be considered a voluntary service, "he said.
Courtesy call
Mr. Kufuor made this appeal when members of the three sub-metro badembly of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) paid him a courtesy call last Tuesday at his home in Accra. .
The delegation, which included about 30 members of the badembly from sub-metros of South Okaikoi, South Ablekuma and Ashiedu Keteke, was led by AMA President Alfred Adjei.
Mr. Adjei said the purpose of the visit was to have members of the badembly recognize the enormous role played by Mr. Kufuor in consolidating the country's local governance system and benefit from his rich experience in local governance.
In the same spirit, the delegation presented a quote to the former president for his "pioneering role in promoting decentralization and local governance in Ghana".
To be responsible
Mr. Kufuor urged members of the badembly to consider their position as direct representatives of the local population as a powerful power and to hold them to account by ensuring that they approve policies that meet their needs.
He urged them to consider themselves not only as representatives of the people, but also as people who solve problems, because "you live with the people and you understand their problems better than the parliamentarian who can only visit them periodically" .
Mr. Kufuor also urged them to refrain from soliciting offers from the badembly leaders as such practices could compromise their ability to hold accounts.
"The idea of local governance is to ensure that citizens, who are the true sovereign authority of the country, have a chance to participate in their governance.
When you compromise your authority, you also compromise the sovereignty of the people.
MMDCE are your servants. You are leaders not because you have been trained to become administrators, but because people have chosen you to be the overseers of the technocrats.
So you should think of yourself as very powerful and demanding accountability at all times, "he said.
Huge contribution
For his part, Adjei extolled the former president for his significant contribution to the development of the country's local governance system, even before he became president.
He praised Kufuor's plea that their efforts should be rewarded by the payment of an allowance, an appeal he described as very dear to all members of the country's badembly.
