BAs with many other aspects of the epidemic, the vaccine is not without controversy.
For starters, there are only 450,000 doses left and experts are worried that it will be exhausted. The DRC government resisted international pressure and initially blocked attempts to test another experimental vaccine amid claims of "medical colonialism".
Last week, controversy led to the resignation of Health Minister Oly Ilunga Kalenga, a virulent critic of the new vaccine.
International repercussions
The WHO finally declared the epidemic a "public health emergency of international concern" in July, relieved by the relief provided by NGOs and other experts.
The decision was made after the discovery of cases in Uganda, where the virus was quickly contained.
Many hoped that the statement would spark more donor funding, but the WHO said its funding gap was still huge, with only about half of the money needed to control the epidemic.
