Lowe's is laying off thousands of workers.
Layoffs will include bademblers badembling items such as grills and patio furniture. The company will also remove maintenance and maintenance work, such as janitors. The company has indicated that it outsources these positions to third-party companies.
Lowe's refused to say exactly how many workers will be fired. Workers whose jobs are eliminated will receive a transition allowance and will have the opportunity to apply for vacancies at Lowe's. The Wall Street Journal first reported on Lowe's plan.
Lowe's operates more than 1,700 stores in the United States. As of February 1, Lowe's employed approximately 190,000 full-time and 110,000 part-time employees.
Under the leadership of Marvin Ellison, CEO of JCPenney, who joined the company last year, Lowe's has launched an ambitious turnaround plan to compete with Home Depot and other retailers.
Previously, Lowe's had closed 20 stores in the United States, discontinued operations in Mexico, and closed its 99 Orchard Supply Hardware stores in the United States. The company is also reducing inventory.
The home improvement sector has been one of the highlights of the retail business against Amazon and its online competitors. Unlike many department stores and mall retailers, Lowe's, Home Depot and home improvement retailers have not mbad-closed stores.
"In this very challenging distribution landscape, we are fortunate to be in a high-demand sector," Ellison told a retail conference in June. "We are focusing on what we call the fundamentals of retail."
