Burger King will start selling its impossible meatless Whopper at more than 7,000 stores in the United States starting Aug. 8. The dummy meat galette, which costs only one dollar more than the beef version, is provided by Impossible Foods. It was launched in April in St. Louis restaurants. The Impossible Whopper contains 15% less fat and 90% less cholesterol than the standard Whopper.
Even so, Burger King says that customers can not tell the difference, especially because the hamburger is designed to "bleed" like a meat cake. This is due to a compound called heme, present in plants and meat. (The Impossible Whopper is stuffed with mayonnaise, so it's not good for vegans.)
To prove just how similar the two tastes are, Burger King also offers a "taste test" promotion exclusively on DoorDash and on the BK app. Between August 8th and September 1st, customers can receive both a Whopper and a Impossible Whopper for $ 7. They will have to use the code "IMPOSSIBLE" to qualify. DoorDash users can also apply this code for free shipping. There are some fine print, like the fact that the BK application offer is not applicable in Hawaii and Alaska, so check this page first if you want to try the code.
Burger King is not the first fast food chain to incorporate meatless products into its menu. White Castle offers Impossible Burgers, which uses another Impossible Foods meatless pâté recipe, and Carl's Jr. sells a veggie burger made by Beyond Meat, a competitor of Impossible Foods. Of course, with Impossible Foods now having a product in more than 7,000 restaurants, this could represent a huge step for the company and the broader goal of weaning the meat world. The company is also looking to place its product on supermarket shelves, which could happen in the future. The Food and Drug Administration announced this week that it had approved a key ingredient – soy leghemoglobin – for consumption.
