A container that should have been filled with computers donated by China to the Kenyan parliament arrived empty.

The officials are mystified by the disappearance, the seals of the container not being broken.

"I can not understand how an empty container has been loaded from China and shipped to Kenya," said BBC investigator George Kinoti of the East African nation's police.

The Chinese Embbady in Kenya is also perplexed, saying the material had been loaded and shipped for delivery in July, following a high-level parliamentary exchange earlier in the year.

"We were shocked to learn from the National Assembly that when the container arrived … it was empty inside," says the Embbady statement.

This is the first time that donations made to Kenya over the years have not arrived "safe and sound," he added.

Mr Kinoti, director of the Criminal Investigation Police (DCI), said that an investigation had been opened.

According to Kenya's Citizen news website, laptops and computer projectors were among the equipment donated by the Chinese parliament and should have been in the container.
