– NAGRAT alluded to a strike action on a mandatory GHC 10 deduction from members' salaries as an insurance

– Three teacher unions have threatened to withdraw their services from the beginning of the next academic year for deductions on their salaries under an insurance policy supposedly unsolicited

– The three unions stated that although most teachers objected to these deductions, the GES ignored their concerns about impunity.

The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has threatened to go on strike if their welfare concerns are not addressed.

The Association announced that its members would be withdrawn early next academic year in September if their concerns are not resolved by the end of August.

At a press conference in Accra, NAGRAT President Eric Agbe-Carbonu said his members did not receive the best treatment.

He mentioned the non-payment of salary arrears to teachers, delays in promotions and the appointment of non-Ghanaian staff of the Education Service (GES) to management positions at GES, as some of their concerns.

He added that an insurance policy had also been imposed on teachers, which they wished to delete.

He revealed that many teachers still had not received payment for arrears owed to them.

According to him, the government has broken its promise to ensure that all arrears are cleared before March.

"I can not quote a figure on exactly how much is owed, because even some newly recruited teachers also have arrears to pay," he said.

The president of NAGRAT said that most of his members were eager to know when they would receive their salary.

Carbonu also lamented the delay in promoting teachers, some of which have been expected since 2015.

He added that although some teachers had successfully completed the promotional talks, they still had not received a letter from the GES.
