Ilhan Omar and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in Ghana
Somali-born Somali MP Ilhan Omar visited President Donald Trump with footage of his recent trip to Ghana.
Last month, President Trump provoked a lot of turmoil when he urged a handful of women members of the Democratic Congress to "go back and help repair the totally devastated and infested places of the crimes from which they came."
Referring to President Trump's comment in an Instagram article, Ilhan Omar shared a photo of herself and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in Ghana.
She wrote: "They said" send it back ", but the President @SpeakerPelosi did not make the necessary arrangements to send me back, she came back with me ????? So grateful for the honor to return to Africa with @TheBlackCaucus and commemorate the year of return! #Doorofreturn #Ghana ".
Ilhan Omar was among the black caucus members of the US Congress who traveled to Ghana with Ms. Pelosi. The representative of the 5th District Minnesota Congress received huge acclaim when she was introduced to the Ghanaian Parliament by Ms. Pelosi on Wednesday.
She was born in Somalia and became an American citizen in adolescence.
Trump comments
In a series of tweets last July, Trump did not mention any names, but the majority of media and social media users badumed that he was referring to new women in Congress, including Omar, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib and Ayanna Pressley.
He also suggested that President Pelosi would be "very happy to be able to quickly develop free travel arrangements".
A few days after his comments, the people attending his rally launched the slogan "Send it back!" when the president was talking about Omar.
