Stay on your guard! The University of Miami's School of Nursing and Health offers students, faculty, and staff a unique disaster simulation course to educate them on what to do in the event of a disaster. This course on disaster response is the first of its kind, according to the University of Miami. The course is designed to be very realistic in order to closely resemble a real disaster, including the fact that participants have no idea what they are facing.
According to the University, disaster simulation is a three-day field experience for 30 volunteers that simulates a real disaster. These brave volunteers have no idea of the type of disaster that will be simulated before it starts. The simulations take place at the UM School of Nursing and Health Studies Simulation Hospital.
Participants are asked to prepare for what would be like living outside without a proper place to rest or shower. They will also have limited electricity, plumbing and air conditioning, all without leaving the campus.
"It will be very intense, very stressful and very realistic," said Antonia Eyssallenne, pediatrician and internist at the University of Miami. Eyssallene is an Assistant Professor at the Miller School of Medicine and led this simulation course.

This disaster simulation course is particularly relevant given its location in the country. The people of Miami are not strangers to the disaster. Hurricanes hit southern Florida year after year, and effective disaster response is critical to a quick and successful recovery. This course prepares students for reality.
"We all want to help, but are you ready and able to help?" Said UM Susana Barroso-Fernandez, Assistant Professor at SONHS, who leads the special projects of the Simulation Hospital . "Better to know it now than when you fall into chaos in the middle of nowhere."
This disaster simulation training prepares students for reality and could save lives in the next disaster.
