Stella Nyanzi, a prominent Ugandan academic, was sentenced Friday (August 18th) to 18 months in jail for a poem in which she used the bad of President Yoweri Museveni's mother to criticize her "oppression, repression and repression" in the country.
Stella, who once called Museveni a "pair of bad," was found guilty of cyber-harbading the Facebook message that went viral.
The academic sat for his sentence via a video link from a maximum security prison located on Lake Victoria in Kampala. Reuters reported that she shouted vulgarities, burst her bads and gave a double major several times during the hearing.
"My presence in this Court as a suspect and prisoner highlights the many facets of the dictatorship. I have exposed the entanglement of the autocracy, "she wrote in her last post, a poem about her trial.
"I refuse to be a mere spectator in the fight against the worst dictator."
This condemnation has inflamed the indignation of human rights activists who accused the government of using electronic communications laws to stifle political dissent.
