More and more hospitalized people with serious pulmonary problems related to vaping have been discovered, health officials in Wisconsin said Friday. Last week, health officials reported eight cases of this strange group, all involving teenagers. The cases now concern adolescents and young adults. According to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, 11 cases have been identified (including the group of eight), and state disease investigators are studying seven other possible cases. Officials did not confirm the cause of these injuries, but they explicitly warned residents not to vape and the CDC joined the investigation.
Cases go back to the end of June. All patients were diagnosed with severe lung injury and symptoms such as shortness of breath, fatigue, chest pain and weight loss. The severity of the disease has varied. Some people need medical badistance to breathe. Although patients have generally improved, we still do not know if they will experience long-term effects.
"We are currently interviewing patients, all of whom have reported recent vaping. Our investigators continue to collect information on the names and types of vapor control products used in the hope of finding a common bond, "Andrea Palm, Wisconsin General Secretary, Wisconsin Health Services, said Friday. "We urge people to avoid vaping electronic products and cigarettes. Anyone, especially young people recently dressed in vaping, who have unexplained breathing problems should consult a doctor. "
State health officials are now collaborating with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an official from Wisconsin Health Services told E-mail in Gizmodo. They have also notified other States in case similar cases may occur elsewhere.
Until now, no common thread has been found among patients apart from vaping. But we still do not know exactly how electronic cigarettes could be the cause of these cases, if they really are the culprits. Health officials previously reported that patients reported spraying nicotine and THC in the weeks and months prior to the onset of their first symptoms.
What we do know is that the rate of electronic cigarette use has skyrocketed among teens in recent years. And while many tobacco control experts and advocates believe that e-cigarettes can be a useful tool in getting traditional tobacco smokers to quit, others have argued that we knew very little about the short and long term effects of these products on health.
In response to the explosion of teen drug, government agencies such as the Food and Drug Administration have attempted to speed up the implementation of stricter regulations on these products, while States like California are currently trying to strictly ban their use and sale in public.
