Sonic has to go fast, but has the decision to rethink the hedgehog been taken as well quick? Jim Carrey, who plays evil Dr. Robotnik in the next Sonic the hedgehog film, said the response of fans that led the director Jeff Fowler to delay the release of the film to rework the character is the kind of thing that risks turning the creative property into "Frankenstein's monster".
Speaking to a panel of the Showtime series Joke during the Television Critics Association's press tour (reported by The Wrap), Carrey was asked about the reaction of fans to the design of the main character in Sonic the hedgehogwhich has been largely planned for, finally, just about everything.
The overwhelming reaction to the trailer initially prompted Fowler to say that the character was undergoing a redesign. However, this announcement resulted in even more reaction backwards, as it meant that visual effects artists could suffer from an overloaded and tedious production schedule. Shortly after, the film was postponed to February 14, 2020, giving the team three more months.

Some visual effects artists (not connected to Sonic the hedgehog) had previously told io9 that they disagreed that the negative reaction from fans could result in such a response from a studio. This seems to be an opinion shared by Carrey, who shared his thoughts on Sonic's redesign at TCA.
"I do not really know what I think of the public who participates in the creation of this film, the time it's going on," he said. "Sometimes you find that the collective consciousness decides that she wants something and then, when she gets it, she says," OK, I do not want it "… You become a Frankenstein monster at some point, is not it? "
Carrey added that he did not need to do it again Sonic the hedgehog as a result of the recast, and noted how he was not "extremely concerned" by the evolution of the situation. Anyway, he always plays with robotic birds an evil scientist whirling mustaches, so I'm sure he'll be fine.
Sonic the hedgehog comes out on February 14, 2020. Maybe. We will see.
