Doctors at a hospital in southern China removed something unusual in the intestine of a man: a toothbrush 14 cm long that he had swallowed 20 years ago.
The No. 3 People's Hospital of Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, said it was one of the strangest objects found by doctors in the bowels of a patient, as well as nails, coins and lighters.
The patient, a 51-year-old man, nicknamed Li, was admitted to the hospital for abdominal pain at the end of June. A scanner revealed a mysterious object in his duodenum, reported the Xinhua news agency.
Then, Li told the doctors that he could be acting from a toothbrush that he swallowed in a suicide attempt 20 years ago when he received a HIV diagnosis related to drug use. Not feeling comfortable after the failure of suicide, he continued his life and put aside the embarrbading experience.
The toothbrush remained peacefully in his belly until 2014, when Li began to suffer from abdominal pain and inflammation of the gallbladder.
"The toothbrush may have remained in the stomach and duodenum for many years before sticking to the bile ducts, causing inflammation and pain.If it is left untreated, it could touch the liver and cause a deadly infection, "said Liu Jialin, Li's surgeon.
Liu said that they had used an endoscope to retrieve the toothbrush, which had a "naked" appearance with all its bristles dissolved.
After the suicide attempt, he gave up the drug and started treatment for HIV. Later, he was married and his wife gave birth to two healthy children.
"I have long forgotten the toothbrush, baduming that she was expelled from herself," he said.
