Donald Trump said that the United States will cure AIDS and childhood cancer "very soon".

The President made his comments during the 2020 election campaign despite the $ 900 million cut from the National Cancer Institute budget.

He did not mention it in his speech.

The president has given no indication of how quickly he wants to achieve something that researchers have been trying for decades.

In Ohio, he told the crowd, "We will make new scientific and medical advances. I see what they do. I see him. They show me.

"What we are doing in our country today, it has never been the same. We will soon end the AIDS epidemic in America and cure cancer in children very soon. '

This is not the first time that he claims that cancer will be cured during his presidency.

At another rally in June, the president promised to "offer remedies for many problems, many diseases, including cancer and others. And we are getting closer all the time.

At both events, he also claimed that America would soon put a man on Mars.

In February, during his State of the Union address, Trump pledged $ 50 million ($ 41 million) for cancer research in children.

Trump did a huge slash at the National Cancer Institute in the same budget announcement, according to Business Insider.

He also said that under his leadership, AIDS would be eradicated over the next 10 years and proposed funding of $ 291 million (£ 240 million) to fight the disease.

But Trump has also been criticized for his AIDS policies and led a series of cuts that cut $ 1 billion from global AIDS initiatives.

His administration also canceled the protections granted to patients with HIV and other pre-existing conditions.
