This magnificent 1948 steam train enjoys the long, light summer evenings as it leaves London every Tuesday from June to September to take pbadengers back and forth to the beautiful Surrey Hills.
Forget the overcrowded platforms, the race for seats and the unfathomable delays due to "leaves on the line", board the magnificent steam locomotive The Mayflower at Waterloo Station in London, gives the impression of returning back in a bygone era. You do not need your ham ham M & S either – not when a three-course dinner is part of the experience, served in dining cars at the Pullman.
Boarding the Mayflower with my husband Patrick, I felt happy to have an extra bite to fit my jerky environment as I was greeted with sofas to savor while settling into my comfortable seat.
As the train cruised the departure, and the wheels began to move slowly, it was hard not to feel like playing in the hit movie The Railway Children.

Inside, the trolleys resemble a movie set with wood paneling, comfortable seating, table lamps and curtains with huge picture windows to show the view.
If only the train was always like that.
As we moved out of the suburbs and into Guildford, the landscape shifted from a hectic city to a peaceful countryside and back gardens with swings were replaced by paddocks of pastures and golden fields filled with corn and fresh hay.

The company also offers Steam Express experiences to destinations elsewhere in the UK, using various old locomotives, including the Flying Scotsman.
Penetrating in a glbad of sparkling, I saw the panoramas with my bubbles as The Mayflower climbed the path through the Surrey Hills, before descending to the foot of the North Downs for the sunset.

Just glorious, and it was hard to believe that I was an hour away from the capital. All dishes are freshly prepared on board under the power of the locomotive chef for an exceptional dining experience.
You can choose between a three-course menu in the dining car or take your own food on board if you prefer. I opted for the fixed menu as a treat. After all, I can eat a picnic in a normal train at any time.

Indulgent and quite delicious, I immersed myself in smoked salmon, chicken and chocolate pudding to die for, pastoral scenes. Too fast, the three and a half hour round trip was over and we returned to Waterloo – relaxed, happy and extremely comfortable.
I had a wonderful evening and it was a pleasure to let the steam train take over. The only drawback was getting off the Mayflower and being sent straight back to the real world of train travel – taking the subway home!
