A meningococcal B vaccine could be added to the free vaccination program in Australia if there is new evidence showing its effectiveness.
The vaccine is not currently free because the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee does not know how effective it is in a "population-wide program," said Sunday the federal minister of health. Health, Greg Hunt.
"I urged GlaxoSmithKline to re-submit to the PBAC any new evidence to address these issues in the hope of funding a vaccine against this terrible disease," said Dr. Hunt.
The pharmaceutical company had submitted new information to the committee for consideration at its next meeting in November.
If recommended, the vaccine would be transferred to the national program "as a priority," the minister said.
It occurs after the death of a 20-month-old toddler from Tamworth, New South Wales, after contracting the virus.
