With an all-new Batman set to debut in January, CBR looks back on the other people who took over the Bat-Mantle.
With Future State around the corner, the DC Universe is set to meet the last Batman as Bruce Wayne goes into hiding and operates as Dark Detective. While this is certainly a huge first for DC to introduce a Black Batman, it’s far from the first time someone has donned the cape and hood in the absence of Bruce Wayne. Over the character’s 100-year publication history, Bruce Wayne has quit his role as Batman on several occasions and his various allies have taken up the Dark Knight’s torch to protect the streets of Gotham.

Azrael
First appearance in Dennis O’Neil and Joe Quesada’s Batman: Sword of Azrael # 1, Jean-Paul Valley, aka Azrael, took over Batman’s torch after Bane smashed Bruce Wayne’s back in the “Knightfall” story arc. After meeting Azrael, Bruce began training him to take over the baton from Batman in case something happened to him. Unfortunately, due to his time as a brainwashed assassin, Azrael was a much more violent Batman than the original. This aggressiveness led Bruce to retrain and eliminate Azrael to become the Bat again.
Dick grayson
The first Robin, current Nightwing and longtime Batman ally was the second person other than Bruce to put the hood on after Bruce disappeared following the events of Grant Morrison, Marco Rudy, Carlos Pacheco, Doug Mahnke and JG Jones’ Final crisis # 6. Dick made the coat his own, lightening the costume and using his acrobatic skills to fight crime in a way his mentor never did. Dick also made Bruce’s biological son, Damian Wayne, his Robin in Grant Morrison and Frank Quietly’s Batman and robin series. Although he excelled during his time as Batman, Dick would eventually drop the mantle when Bruce returned.
Terry McGinnis
Terry McGinnis is the Batman of a Possible Future who succeeded an old Bruce Wayne, who had given up the mantle due to age, to protect Neo-Gotham on the DCAU show. Batman beyond. During his time As Batman, Terry joined the Justice League Unlimited team and discovered he was the biological son of Bruce Wayne, thanks to genetic engineering carried out by Amanda Waller. Terry is also the only person on this list to still hold the Batman mantle in their timeline, having also made the transition from television to comics.
Jason todd
The Red Hood and the second Robin who was killed by the Joker, Jason Todd donned the cloak and hood for a brief stint after Bruce’s aforementioned disappearance. Jason’s time as Batman came during the “Battle for the Cowl” arc which saw Batman’s allies and enemies fight for the right to become the next Batman. Jason’s Batman was heavily armored and carried guns, as Jason saw this as his opportunity to become a better Batman. During his time, Jason killed unreservedly, even going so far as to stab Tim Drake. However, Jason dropped the mantle after being beaten up by Dick Grayson.
Tim drake
The Third Robin in Cape and Hood Dawn, Tim Drake became Batman in a future timeline after Bruce Wayne was killed by Batwoman after reactivating Brother Eye. This version of Tim took a fascist approach to fighting crime, using guns and killing. After meeting his old self, the Earth-0 Batman, the future Tim returns to the past to try and prevent his time from happening by killing Batwoman and activating Brother Eye. He is ultimately stopped by his younger counterpart and the rest of Batman’s allies and sent back to the future.
Jim gordon
Commissioner Jim Gordon became Batman in the “Superheavy” arc after Batman’s apparent death at the hands of the Joker. He operated in a stealth suit aided by his “Rookie” mech suit under the jurisdiction of the GCPD. During his time as Batman Gordon, he clashed with Mr. Bloom, a new villain who sold superpowers that would end up killing their users. Gordon also helped Bruce Wayne become Batman again, bringing him back to Wayne Mansion so he could inject all of his past memories into himself.
Tim fox
The newest addition to the list, Tim Fox is the son of longtime Batman ally Lucius Fox and brother of Luke Fox aka Batwing. Tim made his debut in Len Wein and Irv Novick’s Batman # 313 who saw him clash with his father and express his disgust for his father’s boss, Bruce Wayne. Most recently he was seen in James Tynion IV and Guillem March’s Batman #101 reconnect with his father. It is currently unclear how Tim will become the “Future State” iteration of Batman.
