Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson and Manchester United star Marcus Rashford shared their congratulations following their appearance for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award.

Rashford received a special award for his campaign against food poverty in 2020, while Henderson was nominated for the main award.

As the Reds captain finished second behind F1 star Lewis Hamilton, there was plenty to celebrate in the evening by accepting the Team of the Year award on behalf of Liverpool, while manager Jurgen Klopp won the title of coach of the year.

After the awards, Rashford and Henderson exchanged congratulations on Instagram.

Henderson shared Rashford’s post on winning his award and added the caption “Well done Marcus Rashford. Truly deserved.”

Rashford then responded to Henderson with a thoughtful message, congratulating the midfielder on his success in 2020.

“Thank you brother,” he wrote. “You really deserved this nomination.

“Congratulations on a brilliant 2020. Appreciate your kind words, as always.”

The duo may be rivals with their clubs, but they have developed a strong bond while playing together for England.

Speaking earlier this year, Henderson paid tribute to Rashford’s ability on the pitch, admitting he’s often stunned by the striker’s performance in training.

He said: “You look at Marcus who was injured, but such a talented player. He does things in training where I just think ‘wow’.”

Henderson isn’t the only Reds star to congratulate Rashford on his tireless charity work during the coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking in September, Andy Robertson said the Manchester United striker deserved a standing ovation at Anfield for the work he put into feeding the children.

“The two words everyone is saying is ‘Marcus Rashford’,” the Scotland captain said in an interview with The Times.

“He forced politicians to reverse the decision not to extend free school meals because he wanted every child to be fed.

“What he did was incredible, exceptional. Once the fans returned, Marcus Rashford could be the first Man Utd player to receive a standing ovation here.

“He certainly deserves it because thousands of families are going to be fed now.”
