Writer Die Hard says Bruce Willis classic is ‘more of a Christmas movie’ than Bing Crosby’s White Christmas

DIE HARD isn’t just a Christmas movie, it’s more of a Christmas movie than the biggest party movie of all, Bing Crosby’s White christmas.

This is according to Steven E. de Souza, one of the two writers behind Die hard who got into the great debate about whether John McClane’s heroes deserve to be included in the great pantheon of party films.

In an attempt to prove that Die Hard is as much a Christmas movie as it is the best, de Souza drew a comparison between the 1988 action flick and Crosby’s party favorite in 1954. White christmas.

In Souza’s way of thinking, much of the criticism opponents like Die hard for not being a Christmas movie could easily apply to White Christmas.

He argues that if you applied the same rules to White christmas, it wouldn’t be considered a Christmas movie either.

Speaking on the Script apart podcast, de Souza made his point:

“I think we can all agree, even the skeptics as to why Die Hard is a Christmas movie or not, that White christmas – the 1950s movie starring Bing Crosby and Danny Kay – is a Christmas movie.

“So let’s check the boxes,” he begins.

“Does the film take place during the Christmas holidays? Die hard takes place entirely at Christmas. White christmas, only the first scene and the final scene occur at Christmas, and they take place eight or ten years apart.

“Is the decor a Christmas party?” Die hard takes place entirely during a Christmas party. White christmas, only the final scene is a Christmas party.

“How many Christmas songs are there in the movie? Die hard has four: Let the snow, Winter wonders, Christmas in Hollis, and long live the wind. White christmas only has two Christmas songs: White christmas, of course, and Snow, which probably isn’t even a Christmas song, it’s just a weather song. “

Podcast host Al Horner then shared the full checklist on why Die hard represents a more Christmas movie than White Christmas – but it ultimately begged fans to make up their minds.

“You are the judge who is most Christmas,” he said.

De Souza’s remarks come a week later Die hard director John McTiernan participated in the debate.

“We didn’t want it to be a Christmas movie, but the joy that came with it was what turned it into a Christmas movie,” he said.

Doug Richardson, who has been involved in writing and developing three Die Hard movies, also believes it to be a Christmas movie.

He said Geek den: “The argument that comes up is’ What makes a Christmas movie? Should a Christmas film contain Santa Claus? Suddenly you define what a Christmas movie is.

“If it’s Christmas and if it’s screened as a perennial every year by streaming services and broadcasters, it’s a Christmas movie.”

Willis, however, disagrees, stating in 2018: Die hard is not a Christmas movie. It’s a fucking Bruce Willis movie!

For anyone still on the fence, here are a few reasons why Die Hard is a Christmas movie.
