Besides Tiger King, what was your favorite TV show the year?
Dancing With the Stars has become my favorite show of 2020. I had never seen it before they called me and asked me to participate. [Baskin was a contestant on the latest series of the US reality series in September]. Now that I’m part of the DWTS family, I’m excited to see the stars, the pros, and everyone behind the scenes results from each new routine. I know how hard each of them worked to keep us all entertained during this time of unprecedented uncertainty and I love them for it.
Have you watched anything on the lock that caught your attention?
I usually work seven days a week, from around 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. or 8:00 p.m. At the end of the day, I can turn on the TV while I exercise, or while I collapse, cat-lifeless, on the couch, but five minutes after turning off the TV, I couldn’t tell you what i just watched. I watch TV more to distract myself from the shows and slow down the to-do list going through my head.
You started a podcast this year – do you prefer podcasts over TV?
I cycle to work every day, which is about 10 miles round trip, and listen to podcasts all the time. I’ve been writing my story since I was able to write it, but when the media goes to share it, they only pick the parts that match their idea of what will generate views. If I want to share my story, that should be the whole story, which is why I started videotaping my diary entries and posting them on YouTube.
There will be people who take things out of context and try to use them to validate their own misconception, but now everyone has access to the whole story of my life. I hope others will recognize themselves in my words and have the strength to do what is right for themselves and for our common planet.
There were a lot of voices against you in Tiger King and none for you
Tiger King was presented as a feud between two lunatics, and for Joe it was personal – according to those around him, he never went a day without cursing my name on anyone who would listen. I had never even spoken to him and until the moment he was sentenced to 22 years for trying to have me killed, I had never spoken of him, except to condemn the practice of buying, breeding, sale and exploitation of big cats. . If you talk to me for five minutes, you know my mission is to end the exploitation and private possession of exotic cats. They must have made me look like someone Joe had a good cause to follow – they made me look like a “Karen”.
What’s next for you?
We are working on producing a reality TV show on Big Cat Rescue. There’s the daily work of caring for 50 exotic cats, but our main mission is to end the suffering at its root – and that’s the goal of the show.
