Warner Bros. estimates theaters will still exist in 2023

Warner Bros. ruffled a few feathers when it announced it would release all of its new 2021 movies simultaneously on HBO Max, but the company seems to be betting theaters won’t turn into an apocalyptic wasteland. Variety indicates that the company plans to publish Angry, the prequel to Max Max: Fury Road, and The color purple premiered in theaters in 2023.

Warner’s plan to launch next year’s movies online is a great thing for consumers who would rather stay home than risk catching a deadly virus to see, for example, Godzilla vs. Kong. But the plan immediately made enemies of some Hollywood veterans. Director Christopher Nolan called HBO Max “the worst streaming service” and blamed Warner Bros. for not telling anyone about their plan until just 90 minutes before it was announced.

Despite Warner’s optimistic outlook on the theaters’ existence, the signs on their marquees may not look the same by 2023. AMC has warned investors it will run out of cash in mid-January if it cannot find $ 750 million.
