Starting his full professional career after WWII, Gitlis performed with many famous conductors in the United States in the 1950s.
While many foreign musicians canceled their appearances in Japan after the natural disasters of 2011 and the nuclear meltdown in Fukushima, Gitlis continued to give concerts, including performances in evacuation shelters.
He also played a violin specially made from tsunami wood debris.
