Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia called on Ghanaians not to take for granted the unity and peace the country enjoys.
He said that despite tribal, religious and ethnic diversity, the country has remained indivisible and therefore must constantly jealously guard the existing unity and peace.
“For us as a country, we have come a long way and have had a history of peaceful coexistence among us despite the diversity of tribes, religions and ethnicities. Even in our diversity, we have always remained indivisible and what we have in common goes beyond what divides us.
“It is this love for each other, underpinned by the biblical love for your neighbor as yourself, that today Ghana is considered the most peaceful country in Africa in the world. ‘West and we thank God for it,’ said the vice president.
Dr Bawumia gave the advice when he addressed the Victory Bible Church International (VBCI) Christmas church service in Awoshie in Accra on December 25, 2020.
The visit to the church, according to Dr Bawumia, was his first appearance at the church after the presidential and parliamentary elections of December 2020 and it was no accident that after the victory of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the December election “we are worshiping at the Victory Bible Church”.
Dignitaries
The Vice President was accompanied to the church service by his wife, Mrs. Samira Bawumia, the General Manager of the Bui Power Authority, Mr. Fred Oware, the Chairman of the Board of GOIL, Mr. Kwamina Bartels, a Deputy Minister of Health, Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye, NPP national organizer, Mr. Sammy Awuku and a few members of the NPP Parliament, including Ablekuma North MP, Ms. Sheila Bartels.
Love
Quoting Matthew 22: 37-39, Dr Bawumia urged everyone to “love God and love your neighbor as yourself,” saying that sustaining the unity and peace of the country over the years was a feat. well deserved and accomplished and should not be taken for granted because it is only by the grace of God that there is peace in the land.
It was always easy when you lose an election, but even though we lost by just 40,000 votes in 2008, we made peace and the sanctity of the country’s democracy a priority.
“We lost one, just by 40,000 votes in 2008, but we made the peace and sanctity of our democracy a priority and conceded, so I am very convinced that the Lord who granted us the will to giving priority to national cohesion, peace and tranquility gratification is capable and will do the same for us, ”he said and called on Ghanaians to use themselves to be used by God as instruments of peace .
Vice President Bawumia also prayed to God to grant the country dominance over acts of omission and commission which he said threatened the unity and peace enjoyed by Ghanaians as a nation.
Elections
Referring to the elections which have just ended, he said that “the Ghanaian spirit of peace was again tested when we went to the polls for the presidential and parliamentary elections and, luckily, by favor and the mercy of the Almighty Lord, we have accomplished this task peacefully.
Elections, according to Dr Bawumia, usually came with winners and those who didn’t, but the battle would always be with the Lord.
He asked that if the battle belonged to the Lord, for whom was the victory?
“The victory can only be for the Lord, it is not for us because the battle is his. So at the end of the day we have finished the elections, we have given victory to the Lord and it is a victory for Ghana and we should be proud of it, ”he told the congregation.
He was grateful to the church for the warm welcome and promised to make another visit.
Sermon
In a sermon, VBCI founder Bishop Nii Apiakai Tackie-Yarboi urged Ghanaians to keep the peace and ensure goodwill at all times.
He also called for the goodwill of the country’s political class, especially in this Christmas season.
He, however, expressed concern that Christians paid so much attention to going to heaven and said that they must make the earth a better place before they go to heaven.
