My Christian faith made me support Nana Addo – Cwesi Oteng

Since 2016, when Gospel musician Cwesi Oteng decided to camp with the New Patriotic Party (NPP), he has been criticized by some and had to justify his decision.

Despite the criticism, he again supported the NPP and President Akufo-Addo this year and he said Graphic showbiz recently that his Christian faith motivated him to do so and he was not disturbed by the reaction.

“I think it’s okay for celebrities to add their voice to social development. It is fitting for celebrities to stand alongside political parties that they believe have the right policies to move the country forward.

“Taking a step like this won’t be accepted by everyone and if it’s called a violent reaction, that’s okay because not everyone will love you, no matter who you are.

“In my activities, I am an advocate for young people. I’ve been a development activist since I got into gospel music. I advocated that we have better music videos as Gospel artists. At that time, our videos were shot at the beach and by flowers.

“I also pleaded for a new Christian Music Day where music is global, where Ghanaian Gospel musicians will not be linked to Ghanaians in Ghana but also to other nationals.

“When I saw that the policies of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo could move our country to another day far from the days when families sold their properties to educate their male children and left women aside, I had to support the NPP.

“We are talking about a time when education is for everyone. When I see people magnifying other things beyond education, I can’t stand the unusual, sit and dance and appear on TV like everything is fine.

“For the last 20 years of my life, I have read a book every week, so I may have read over 2,000 books, so I cannot be indifferent.

“I campaigned with the National Cathedral because I think it is a symbol of respect and honor. These are the reasons why I voted for Nana Addo. Besides its successes in development, education and infrastructure, I also voted on my faith as a Christian, ”he said.

Away from politics, Cwesi Oteng also spoke about the challenges of the gospel music industry, including his performance at awards.

There have been times when we hear that the organizers of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) are not able to secure enough works to nominate in the Gospel categories, but Cwesi Oteng feels that it should not be. the case, claiming that they should be spoiled for choice.

He said Gospel musicians always put good works out there and the organizers of these awards should not be missed. “I don’t see what else they can do with the nominations when it comes to Gospel music.

“I believe they can actually allow Gospel music in a lot more categories than just Gospel categories. Gospel musicians are musicians but they are just labeled Gospel. All of this identity is based on religion and does not help creativity.

“It’s like Gospel is labeled for acceptance anyway, whether the productions are good or not, just because it’s labeled is good.

“But I think Gospel musicians should be treated like musicians because some of the people who have led creative revolutions are also from the Gospel Fraternity. I think the categories where Gospel musicians are accepted should be broader.

“I think gospel music has shown great creativity and that a lot of investment is devoted to it. You can have a secular show without a keyboard on stage, but you can’t do it with the Gospel event. Gospel musicians invest more in live performances than in lay people, ”he said.
