James Wade landed the first nine-dart finish at the World Darts Championship for five years, before crashing into former Lakeside World Champion Stephen Bunting on a dramatic afternoon at Alexandra Palace.

Wade posted his lowest World Championship average since 2014 as he relinquished a two-set lead, although he landed his third nine-stinger game show midway through – the first at Alexandra Palace since January 2016.

Wade has enjoyed a brilliant career, but the title of world champion has so far proved elusive – with three semi-finals his best comeback in the sport’s flagship event.

He has been pushed by many to fight for the Sid Waddell Trophy after making the European Championship and Grand Slam darts finals in recent months, to become the sixth player in the first 10 to leave the tournament.

This contest was billed as Wade’s combination ending against Bunting’s power score and so it happened in early exchanges, with Wade punishing “ The Bullet ” for debauchery to establish a commander cushion.

Bunting rallied 2-0 in the first set to force a decider in which he had the throwing advantage, but was left out on the streets wasting two defined darts, as Wade capitalized with a 62-shot. with two darts to strike first.
