TikTok stars Charli and Dixie D’Amelio, along with some of their friends, angered fans after apparently taking a vacation to the Bahamas over the holidays.
The sisters and a handful of their fellow creators flew to the tropics during the COVID-19 pandemic, raising concerns that they were traveling from a notorious California hotspot and may not be taking the necessary precautions, AND Canada reported.
The TikTok influencer watchdog account, the TikTok Room, shared some photos and videos of the influencers involved, including Charli and Dixie, Madi Monroe, Noah Beck, Avani Gregg, and more. Among the images: a photo of Madi on a plane (straight from her own Instagram feed) without the widely recommended face mask. The D’Amelio sisters haven’t posted anything about the trip on their own social media, but other members of the group have shared Instagram stories and videos.
The fans were do not delighted to see the group travel – especially when, according to NBC News, hospital beds at their home base in Los Angeles are half full with COVID-19 patients. The city of Los Angeles is currently under a “Safer at Home” emergency order; and last week, the capacity of intensive care units (ICUs) in southern California hospitals was 0%, according to the Los Angeles Times. “It’s so overwhelming. Their work as ‘influencers’ literally allows them to STAY AT HOME and earn an unfathomable amount of money, ”wrote a TikTok Room commentator. “While [sic] many more risk their lives every day working and wish they could work from home, but that can’t happen because they have to pay the bills … THIS is the exact reason the spread of COVID will NEVER stop. They promote the trips to all their fans. I am embarrassed. They better not make the sad excuse though [sic] saying they have traveled for work because they know full well they can work from home but are selfish and are traveling during a pandemic.
Another person commented: “I haven’t been able to see my friends for almost a year and you will be traveling wtf.” Some fans have even made TikTok videos of their own presentation of Charli’s apparent hypocrisy regarding the stay-at-home guidelines.
According to BuzzFeed News, The group were apparently at the Atlantis complex in Nassau, where travelers are not allowed to enter without a negative COVID-19 test result. However, a negative test does not guarantee that a person does not have the virus, and the group could put many more at risk.
This is not Charli and Dixie’s first controversy. The duo came under fire recently after a video showing they were being rude to their private boss went viral and led to the two influencers losing followers at a rapid rate. The sisters eventually responded to the video, with Charli crying and Dixie stating that the entire video was a setup for the content.
As for the trip to the Bahamas, the members of the group in question have not yet responded publicly to the reaction. Teen vogue will update this story as it develops.
