Unlike the year 2019 which saw a lot of controversy, the year 2020 only had a few.

Well, the few incidents of scandals can be attributed to the pandemic, which left no room for much activity.

YEN.com.gh highlights four major scandals that took place in 2020 under the Akudo-Addo government.

1. Agyapa offer

Number one is the agreement with Agyapa Royalties.

The Agyapa Royalties Deal is the government’s strategy to raise capital from revenues from the extractive (mining) sector to finance the country’s development projects.

It should be noted that the Agyapa Royalties Agreement is a strategy that governments of all countries have adopted to raise funds in the global financial market.

The never-ending saga is mainly due to the fact that the content and character of the offshore company Agyapa Royalties are shrouded in secrecy; and the fact that the offshore company is incorporated in the tax haven of Jersey, in the Canary Islands, in the United Kingdom.

“The NDC demanded that Akufo-Addo recover the billions of cedis his government illegally paid under the shady ‘Agyapa’ deal to Databank, which is owned by his cousin and finance minister Ken Ofori Atta.

2. Auditor General

Another scandal that hit the airwaves was the “sacking” of the Auditor General, Daniel Domelovo.

It started with a letter to the Auditor General asking him to go on accumulated leave.

I will be president for all – assures Akufo-Addo

It is believed that, the directive to leave was In May 2020, Auditor General Daniel Domelevo was found in contempt for failing to respond to a complaint filed by Senior Minister Yaw Osafo Maafo, who challenged the $ 1 m surcharge on him.

Some civilian organizations and individuals have alleged that the Auditor General’s determination to overtax allegedly corrupt officials, including senior officials like the senior minister, led to his dismissal.

3. Amide

Another scandal that has been going on for days after weeks is the question of Martin Amidu’s resignation.

The special prosecutor, Martin Alamisi Amidu, resigned from his post after citing various reasons.

One of the reasons he gave to justify his resignation was government interference in the performance of his duties.

His resignation raised many issues as the two camps continued to respond to each other.

However, it is said that Amidu is seeking asylum in the UK.

4. Akufo-Addo accepts a bribe

Well this particular scandal was not actually a scandal as it was immediately called off on arrival. Days before the 2020 general election, a viral video was circulating indicating that President Akufo-Addo was accepting a bribe in an envelope.

According to NPP, the video was tampered with by the NDC, to paint the presidential candidate in a bad light.

In other news, the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) says it is confident the Supreme Court will uphold the re-election of President Nana Akufo-Addo in the 2020 polls.

NPP communications director Yaw Buaben Asamoa said the president’s legal team was ready to denounce the petition’s vacuum and the continued denial that Akufo-Addo actually won the election “without a doubt” .
