Liverpool have reportedly signed Celta Vigo defender Stefan Bajcetic before the January transfer window opens next week.
The 16-year-old center-half joins the Reds from Celta Vigo, having also been on Manchester United’s radar.
Bajcetic has impressed Liverpool scouts since they first saw him late last year, and they rushed to beat rivals United upon his signing.
He moves on to the Premier League champions on a £ 224,000 contract, while left-back Calum Scanlon joins Birmingham City for £ 400,000, according to The Athletic.
The publication claims Liverpool chiefs worked around the clock to secure Bajcetic’s signature before transfer regulations changed due to Brexit on January 1.
Their efforts to sign the youngster on time shows how much they consider him. Bajcetic and England Under-15 defender Scanlon will now have time to settle in before the coaches decide which teams they will join.
Liverpool’s upper defensive ranks could also be the subject of a bit of a boost when the transfer window opens next week.
Makeshift defender Fabinho was teamed up with Nat Phillips for the Reds’ 0-0 draw at Newcastle on Wednesday, with Joel Matip due to be sidelined for three weeks with a groin injury.
And Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has been linked with a move from Lille defender Sven Botman, first-choice center-backs Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez ahead of a race to return this season after long-term knee injuries.
According to the Transfer Window podcast, the Reds began talks about a boost in January for Botman, 20, who has impressed in Ligue 1 this quarter.
Signed this summer from Ajax, the young Dutchman played every minute for Lille, second this season.
The Mastiffs have suffered only one defeat in 17 games and post the second best record in the division, broken only by Paris Saint-Germain.
