Seemingly out of nowhere, Manchester United suddenly appear to be real title challengers after superb form.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have won seven of their last nine Premier League games and find themselves just three points behind bitter rivals and leaders Liverpool after playing one game less.
Belief seems to be growing at Old Trafford that a first title since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement could be on the cards.
But for that to happen, they may need to strengthen in January and add more depth to the squad.
Here are six players United would target in the coming month as they seek to create a squad capable of pushing Liverpool to the end …
Max Aarons (Norwich)
It was somewhat surprising that right-back Max Aarons didn’t leave Norwich this summer.
The 20-year-old was arguably the Canaries’ most impressive player last season despite being relegated, but despite his connection to a number of big clubs in the previous window, they managed to keep him.
But United appear ready to test their resolve again in January and are said to be in the process of making a £ 20million offer for the England U-21 international.
Aarons would provide competition for Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and could prove to be a crafty signing if she comes off.
Renato Sanches (Lille)
Do you remember Renato Sanches?
The 23-year-old Portuguese midfielder was considered one of Europe’s brightest young talents at one point, but never quite reached his full potential at Bayern Munich or on a surprise loan from Swansea .
Now, however, he is rediscovering his best form at the French side of Lille, and is said to be catching the attention of a number of elite clubs.
There are suggestions United could fight Liverpool for his signing, and it remains to be seen whether either side will make an offer in the coming weeks or, indeed, whether Lille will be willing to let him go. .
Kieran Trippier (Atletico Madrid)
Former Tottenham right-back Kieran Trippier has impressed since moving to Atletico Madrid last summer.
And if United fail to land Aarons there is speculation they could turn their attention to the England international, who could be tempted by a return to the Premier League.
One stumbling block is a recent 10-week global ban Trippier received from the FA for breaking betting regulations, and if he signed he wouldn’t be able to play until March.
For this reason, United may well wait until summer before rushing to the Bury-born defender.
Dayot Upamecano (RB Leipzig)
In addition to full-back positions, United are also keen to strengthen in the center of defense.
And a man they’ve watched for some time is RB Leipzig star Dayot Upamecano.
Solskjaer couldn’t hide his admiration for the player ahead of his side’s match against the Bundesliga side in the Champions League earlier this season, admitting he was eager to see the Frenchman “up close”.
However, Upamecano recently signed a new deal in Leipzig, which means it is unlikely to be cheap.
Nevertheless, its quality is such that it would be a signature that would surely be worth every penny.
Moises Caicedo (independent from Valle)
You may not have heard of Moises Caicedo yet, but the 19-year-old is set to become one of the stars of the future.
The central midfielder has already won four caps for Ecuador and has turned heads with his superb performances for club Independiente del Valle.
This has led to talk of some of the big European boys eyeing his signing, and Caicedo himself has confessed that United are his ‘dream club’.
Chelsea are the other Premier League side that are supposed to monitor their progress, and we could be in a transfer standoff this month.
Léon Bailey (Bayer Leverkusen)
Could another player who has always been linked with a move to England be the window where Leon Bailey finally gets a transfer?
The Bayer Leverkusen striker has once again shone in the Bundesliga this season, scoring nine goals and making seven assists in all competitions.
He recently joined the English agency USM, in a move that could increase his chances of changing Premier League.
It is also believed that Tottenham, Everton and Arsenal are interested, but given United’s high position in the table, they may well be the team that would tempt Bailey the most.
