Vikings creator Michael Hirst (The Tudors, Elizabeth and Elizabeth: the golden age) revealed in a recent exclusive interview some of the surprises fans can expect in these latest episodes, and also reflected the legacy of the series.
Warning: Spoilers for Vikings Season 6B coming soon.
In case you were wondering if former stars Ragnar (played by Travis Fimmel) and Lagertha (Kathryn Winnick) might appear in the final round, Hirst said to me, “There are two answers to that. The first is that Ragnar never leaves. Ragnar being, at the time of his death, a semi-mythical character, one always speaks in the great room. His saga is already part of Viking history and the meaning of Viking life. I tried very hard to keep him alive in the story – everyone compares himself to him, compares his sons to Ragnar, he is a perpetual presence in the story.
“The only other thing I will say is that these last 10 episodes are absolutely full of surprises. So you just have to wait and see, ”Hirst added.
Hirst also spoke about the decision to kill Lagertha at the start of the 20-episode sixth season, rather than keeping the fan-favorite character alive until the end of the series. Kathryn Winnick’s character died in the first half of Season 6, which aired on History in early 2020.
“I’ve never done it in this calculating way – I never backed down thinking, ‘Maybe it would be a good idea to keep Lagertha alive,’” Hirst explained. “I laid out in my own head and on paper an ending that I thought was worthy of it.
Lagertha certainly had a decent ending, with the entire seventh episode of Season 6, “The Ice Maiden,” dedicated to her funeral. “I wanted this to be a great occasion,” Hirst said.
Of course, Vikings has already lost major cast, including Ragnar Lothbrok himself, played by Travis Fimmel, around whom the series was originally centered. Ragnar died in season 4.
Hirst said there was no doubt that Vikings could – and would continue – without Fimmel and Ragnar.
“I was predetermined that Ragnar was going to die and that his sons were going to take over. I wanted to get there. For me, there was a historical necessity to it, and also a poetry to it, ”said the show’s creator.
“I’ve been warned by Americans – or at least some of the Americans involved in the show – that most shows die if the main character dies and that’s a big bet and I was sure I wanted to take that chance. Hirst explained.
“I said, ‘You know what, I’ve got Ivar the Boneless coming down the track. Do you really think I don’t want to come in and play and start investigating what Ivar the Boneless did? Besides Bjorn sailing around the Mediterranean, Ivar the Boneless, one of the most famous Vikings of all time. I was absolutely sure that the story would not die with Ragnar, that I had enough ammunition to go back up and spark people’s interest with their sons.
