Bringing joy to people in the more immediate future is, of course, The voice. Not unreasonably, will.i.am is often asked what might make a man of his success and wealth, year after year, swing in a chair with Olly Murs.
“It’s like being a record director, every year there’s something new,” he explains. It’s good to clarify this, but by talent competition standards, there aren’t many long-term success stories. The voice, and you never really know how long the coaches frame the acts. will.i.am, with his real desire to help young people, is certainly one of the most involved. But does he stay in touch?
“The group I had last year, NXTGEN, did they miss out,” he says. “I took them to America, recorded an album, shot a bunch of videos, and all of it as I wanted. Then the group split up! Yeah, they screwed up. He shrugs his shoulders. “But there’s not much you can do with someone, they have to do the rest.”
Yet this year “there is a scary army of singers, this is the year of the best. And I’m not just saying that. What am I like? What the what, dot com, backslash, saint MF.“
It would be nice if it were true. Something positive to start the year, anyway. So, I say to will.i.am, is there something to look forward to?
“People need to be happy and optimistic,” he says. “[But] the vaccine will take longer. And you look: January, crates galore. “
That’s not exactly the bouncing note I wanted to end on, Will.
“I don’t want to lie!” he exclaims. “People have to be prepared. Winter is coming, brother. White Walker is about to come, my brother. Do you want me to tell you a Smurf story, or the truth? Winter is coming, buddy. I wish I could have said to myself: “It’s going to be Smurfy, 2021…” “
He left again.
