Constantine has just come face to face with his darkest form and has proven what makes him the most cunning hero in the DC Universe.

The heroes of the DC Universe found themselves faced with their worst nightmares of what they could become Dark Nights: Death Metal. But it turns out that for a member of the Justice League Dark, that’s not much of a problem to solve.
Constantine just ran into his Dark Multiverse counterpart, and he’s proven what makes him a long-term hero.

John Constantine has always been a bit more of a wild card within the superhero community, willing to perform dangerous acts and use cruel tactics to get his way. This is probably why his Dark Multiverse counterpart – one of the various champions created by the Darkest Knight as part of his 52 Final Realities – is surprisingly similar to him in terms of temperament and attitude. He even goes out of his way to save the main incarnation of the DC Universe from Constantine, protecting him from a demented version of Superman so he can profit from the murder himself. Although Constantine manages to land just one attack, he quickly gives up to his Dark Multiverse counterpart and asks for a nightcap as a final request.
Despite Dark Constantine’s punk rock aesthetic and his low-key loyalty to the Darkest Knight, the two Constantines are able to find some kind of deadlock. Even in the chaos that surrounds them as the multiverse fights to the death, the two decide to just have a drink in the ruins of a small pub. The two end up with a drink in hand and hint at the few things that really separate them. It turns out that the darker version of Constantine was once a hero, but eventually let go of those more noble intentions as the weight of the dead on his conscience grew too great. He even admits that perhaps this is what set him on the path he ultimately chose, ultimately ending with him as the perfect servant of the Darkest Knight.
The base DC Universe incarnation of Constantine admits that he tries his best not to think about it, proving that one of the two important differences between the two versions of the Magic Trickster is the ability to overcome one’s own guilt for the greater good. The other difference is the skill level at which they operate: as the Dark Multiverse Constantine tries to convince his counterpart to join the Darkest Knight’s armies, it is revealed that the Core-Constantine has managed to magically poison the ice that he put in his pain. drink – kill the dark Constantine and allow the main version of the character to fight another day
Constantine has always been a deceptively heroic figure in the DC Universe, operating under his own code of conduct that keeps him separate from other more heroic figures and forces. But at the end of the day, all this craft and vile ruse is for the people who deserve it, and all in the name of the greater good. Although he can be a bit of a bastard, Constantine is ultimately a hero. That’s what separates him from his darker self, a pitying wizard who has decided to only do things for himself. It’s an interesting parallel and a good showcase for the elements that make Constantine such an enduring red in the DC Universe.
