Former Rector of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), Professor Stephen Adei, has named Jean Mensa the best chairman of the electoral commission in Ghana’s history.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Monday, he said, “I think she’s the best EC president we’ve ever had in terms of skills.”
According to him, his office has stood firm to fight false allegations made by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the elections which have just ended.
“From day one, they’ve always huddled together to paint his negative. I have counted around eight to ten cases the NDC will issue a false statement. She will then issue a statement that it is false.
“They won’t say anything and move on to the next one and issue a false statement and the cycle will continue,” he said.
The NDC, along with some civil service organizations (CSOs), questioned the EC’s steadfast demand for a new voters list.
The Commission had argued that it could not conduct the election of December 7, 2020 with the role it had justifying the need for a new register.
Despite the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, the EC braved the storm to register Ghanaians.
This was praised by the famous academic.
Professor Adei also said that given what Ms Mensa had to go through amid the pandemic to also run the general election on December 7, 2020, this puts her far ahead of her predecessors.
Hung Parliament made of God
Professor Adei believes that the controversy over a suspended Parliament is God-made, and therefore urged Ghanaians to find the reason behind such an event.
“God has shown himself sovereign and I hope NPP and NDC will all recognize him. I don’t believe anyone was waiting for the results.
“The NPP didn’t think they would be that bad and the NDC didn’t think they would be that good in terms of parliamentary seats,” he said.
He revealed that reports and demands presented by a committee set up by the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) to dissolve “winner takes everything in Parliament” were rejected by the administrations led by Atta Mills and Mahama.
“Now they will learn that one person determines who becomes the Speaker of Parliament. I hope this will send a good message to all, ”he added.
In addition, he mentioned various reasons which led to the appalling performance of the ruling NPP party in the parliamentary elections.
“Thirty-one of them [NPP] lost their seats, including 21 ministers and deputy ministers. It was a big blow.
He added that financial sector reform was one of the reasons for NPP’s poor performance.
“About four million people have been severely affected. Although a lot of effort was made at the last minute, people have been suffering for three years.
