CLEVELAND, Ohio – WWE has devoted much of this week’s “Raw” prep to promoting its Legends Night and the return of stars like Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair, Sgt. Massacre and others. However, at the start of the series, it emerged that the Legends would take precedence over the main showdown between Drew McIntyre and Keith Lee.
The WWE Championship match was as advertised: a brutal battle between two outstanding performers. Lee served himself well in a loss. But that’s what happened after that game that made the headlines.
With the legends off the top of the entrance ramp, Goldberg’s music hit the mark. The WWE Hall of Famer entered the ring and called out McIntyre for disrespecting the legends, then challenged the WWE Champion to a match at the Royal Rumble.
It was strange on two fronts. First, McIntyre only showed his admiration for the legends. Hulk Hogan even put McIntyre earlier in the series.
Second, Goldberg is back as part timekeeper to steal yet another spot in the main event in a big pay-per-view. It’s all about ratings and WWE needs them. Still, it’s likely that wrestling fans will roll their eyes at the prospect of another Goldberg title match.
This can go in several ways. Goldberg can take the title at the Royal Rumble, giving us a rematch at WrestleMania in March. Or The Miz could cash in his Money in the Bank contract at Royal Rumble and get into the main event at WrestleMania 37.
Regardless, the events that took place on Raw seem to take Goldberg out of any potential feud with WWE’s hottest superstar right now Roman Reigns. So, this is a victory.
