Ole Gunnar Solskjaer discusses Donny van de Beek ‘failure’ claim after ‘packing bags’ notice

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has played down claims that Donny van de Beek is failing at Manchester United simply because he doesn’t play every week.

The Red Devils boss made the comments after the Dutchman was asked to ‘pack his bags right away’ by the Dutch press if he was excluded from the United squad to face Man City.

Van de Beek joined Manchester United from Ajax for £ 35million in the summer transfer window and had to wait until November 29 to start his first Premier League game.

Since then, Van de Beek has only started one other league game, but has come off the bench eight times for United.

The Dutchman’s final minutes in a United jersey came on 23 December in the Red Devils’ 2-0 victory over Everton in the Carabao Cup.

But he did not play football during Christmas and New Years, which caused an angry backlash back in Holland.

Solskjaer has since responded to the suggestion that Van de Beek fail at United.

“Donny played well when he got the chance,” Solskjaer said. “I think sometimes we’re too quick to jump on it, ‘Oh he’s not playing, he’s a failure.’

“But with Victor and Fred as examples, it takes a little while and now they are extremely important players in our team, in our team, which will be the same with Donny.

Van De Beek has only made two league starts for Manchester United

“He came in and he’s in a midfield group with quality, stimulating with Bruno [Fernandes], Juan [Mata] and Jesse [Lingard]. I got plenty of No 10s, plenty of central midfielders with Paul [Pogba], Nemanja [Vidic], Scott [McTominay] and Fred, and Donny did well when he walked in.

“He’s always ready, he’s always working hard in training, he’s positive and he will make a difference in many games for us this season. He will grow more and more for next year.”
