The Wenchi High Court, chaired by Judge Fredrick Arnold Nawurah, quashed a restraining order filed by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) against the inauguration of Mr. Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah, as a deputy (MP) of the South Techiman constituency.
The Party filed the injunction asking the court to restrict the nomination of the elected deputy and challenged the validity and result of the results of the parliamentary elections in the constituency.
The petitioners accused the EC of having manipulated the compilation of results in favor of the elected MP and considered that their candidate, Mr. Christopher Baasongti Bayere, had won the parliamentary seat in the general election which had just ended.
But, during the court session on Tuesday, Judge Nawurah said the petitioners had no cases, saying the document presented by the NDC was inconsistent and without substance.
Later, Mr. Kwabena Asare, the lawyer for the elected MP, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that his client had not received any court notices.
Post-election violence erupted in Techiman township, killing two while four others, perceived to be NDC supporters, were shot and wounded.
The incident happened at around 3:30 p.m. at Techiman Bonokyempem Hall on Tuesday, December 7, when Mr. Sampson Ofori Gyamfi, Techiman’s municipal election officer, declared Mr. Korsah the winner of the parliamentary elections.
According to the BOI, Mr. Korsah won 49,682 votes to beat his staunch competitor, Mr. Beyere, who had 49,205 votes.
The total of the votes cast for the parliamentary elections was 99,828, the total of valid votes 98,887, and there were 941 rejected ballots.
Dissatisfied with the results and the EC’s statement, some disgruntled NDC supporters attempted to force their way into the Bonokyempem room where the collation of the results was taking place, but security officials did not allow them to do so.
The situation led to increased misunderstanding between security officers and NDC supporters, and because of the melee, security personnel fired shots to disperse the crowd.
Two people are believed to have died as a result of this incident.
