The comedian and actor was one of many celebrities to comment on the incident which saw supporters of Donald Trump attempt to prevent Joe Biden’s presidency from being certified.
The siege, which halted the constituency certification process, saw government officials quickly evacuated from Senate chambers and left a total of four dead. Ashli Babbitt, a 35-year-old Air Force veteran, was killed by an undercover policeman.
Many criticized the police response to the rioters and noted the initial lack of strength compared to that inflicted on those participating in the peaceful Black Lives Matter protests in 2020.
“If these people were black they would all have been shot,” Hart wrote shortly after.
“This shit is beyond the word sad … at this point it’s a disrespect for all people of color.” Why can’t we see this situation handled the same way we’ve seen our people handle over and over. “
He added: “When armed officers are supposed to use force, they don’t… it’s sad !!!!!
As the incident unfolded, Trump released a video asking those involved to return home. However, he then called them “very special” and said “we love you”, while repeating his false claim that he won the election.
