Jurgen Klopp keeps hope on Gini Wijnaldum but it fades

Jurgen Klopp still believes Gini Wijnaldum could sign a new contract, according to reports. But time is running out against the Liverpool boss.

It comes from Athletic. They say Jurgen Klopp “keeps hope” that Gini Wijnaldum stays beyond this season.

But he also thinks that the longer it goes on, the less likely it seems.

Wijnaldum’s contract expires at the end of the season, of course. He also has his suitors with Barcelona (according to the same article) and Internazionale (by CalcioMercato).

All of this puts Liverpool in a difficult position. Wijnaldum is free to talk to the teams and those teams will certainly put more on the table.

The Dutchman is 30 and part of a crowded midfielder at Liverpool – Wijnaldum is not quite the star. Inter and Barcelona can, however, make him an integral part of their squads.

They are also more likely to offer good wages as part of a long-term deal. Considering all of Liverpool’s options, we’re not sure they’ll deliver the same.

So, Klopp is absolutely correct that the longer this lasts, the less likely it is that Wijnaldum will stay.

Sky Sports say Liverpool’s offer to Wijnaldum is ‘long-standing’. This suggests that they don’t move on their terms.

This is how Wijnaldum was supposed to sign him now, it’s because he doesn’t have anything better – not because he likes the deal. It works against Liverpool.

Especially since more and more teams will feel confident in the financial arrangements as we approach summer. His options are widening, while Liverpool’s deal may remain the same.

The most obvious of these options is Barcelona. They have a presidential election on the 24th and will certainly wait until then before making an offer to anyone.

Maybe a new president will vote against Wijnaldum, of course. It would help Liverpool enormously. But that seems unlikely, given the player’s ability.

Unfortunately, someone will surely put the right contract in front of them soon.
