Katie Holmes makes the most of a retro figure

No one makes an outerwear moment like Katie Holmes. Whenever the ever-on-the-move actress-director steps out of her Manhattan apartment, she wears another stunning coat from her extensive collection. Typically, Holmes is drawn to oversized wool styles or tweed jackets, but in 2021, she seems to be broadening her horizons. Yesterday while shopping, Holmes tried out a retro Rag & Bone look. The brand’s black ‘Trinity’ leather coat looks straight out of the 1970s, thanks to its elongated knee-length silhouette and dramatic collar, but the modern shiny texture nods to the Matrix character from which it takes its name. Large enough to lay on top of a cream blazer and white button, the piece was ideal for fighting the cold, or in Holmes’s case, dragging a large Khaite shopping bag out of the cold.

Leather trenches have long been favorites of models like Bella Hadid and Hailey Bieber, but their appeal is universal. Holmes first tried the look on in November, when she wore a chocolate double-breasted version of Magda Butrym on a walk with her boyfriend, Emilio Vitolo Jr. who filled the catwalks of Claude Montana – but the new one Holmes’ favorite dates back ten years. By Jane Fonda in Klute to Richard Roundtree in Tree, the 1970s were a golden age for luxurious long coats. In his sleek Rag & Bone, Holmes seems to take a page from that playbook and show off new verve for the New Year.
