Blaugrana legend admits mercurial Argentine may be heading for summer outing, but top Camp Nou talent remains
Lionel Messi is back at his best at Barcelona and appears to have “at least two or three more seasons” in him “at the top level,” Rivaldo says.
The mercurial Argentine has been slow to get started in 2020-21 after seeing a summer transfer window dominated by speculation about his future.
Messi had informed Barca of his desire to move on, with the 33-year-old disappointed with Camp Nou life on and off the pitch.
He ultimately reversed that decision and revealed in an interview with Goal that he will honor the last year of his contract.
That deal continues to shift towards free agency, with the six-time Ballon d’Or winner being free to speak with suitors outside of Spain if he wishes.
Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain are seen to be lining up for his signing, with the Premier League and Ligue 1 giants keen to add an all-time great to their books.
Rivaldo admits Messi seems to be heading for the exits, but he saw a spark that the South American rediscovered recently.
With that in mind, the former Blaugrana star believes the modern-day icon can stay at the top of his game for several more seasons, with no threat that he will pass away anytime soon.
Rivaldo said Betfair of a man who has contributed 12 goals and six assists to the cause of Barça this season: “Lionel Messi started 2021 very well with good performances, goals and assists as we are all used to seeing .
“It is important for him and the club to maintain their relationship because he could end his time as a Barcelona player.
“We still don’t know if he will renew his contract, but at least we are watching him play near his best again, which indicates he should continue playing at the top level for at least 2-3 more seasons. .
“We have to appreciate the pleasure of seeing him play such magnificent football.
“Either way, it’s important to note that even when Messi isn’t playing at his best, he continues to be Barcelona’s best player, which amplifies his quality and importance for the club.”
Messi scored twice in his last appearance, as Barca edged Athletic Club 3-2 and found the target five times in their last six outings.
