MP for Kpando, Della Sowah
Kpando Constituency MP and former Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Gender, Children and Welfare, Della Sowah, backed calls by NDC General Secretary Johnson Asiedu Nketia for a parliamentary inquiry.
Kpando MP believes that an investigation into the debacle of ballot tearing and the invasion of the chamber by the military, among other unfortunate incidents, would be the only way to restore the sanctity of the country’s democracy .
Mr Asiedu Nketia at a press conference at party headquarters on Friday called for a full parliamentary inquiry into the ballot theft incident, the military invasion of the chamber and the conduct of the clerk Of the president.
According to the former Minister for Gender, Children and Social Welfare, the action of Carlos Kingsley Ahenkorah, among others, when allowed to slip, would be a stain on the country’s maturing democracy.
Addressing the media after the press conference, Della Sowah said an investigation and subsequent sanctions would have a chilling effect on future perpetrators.
She said Mr Ahenkorah, in his statement released on Friday, did not apologize and show remorse for stealing ballot papers from the house of parliament in the election of the president of the 8th legislature.
Della Sowah added that instead, Carlos Ahenkorah justified his actions and dedicated them to his party base, a statement she called unfortunate.
“When we let this slide, the party’s infantry could emulate the next election, which would be suicidal for our democracy,” she said.
The Kpando MP therefore called for immediate action to punish Ahenkorah for his outrageous conduct.
She further called on the leadership of Parliament to immediately investigate how orders were being given to the military to invade the chamber, and expressed the NDC’s determination to protect the country’s democracy in which the party is a key architect.
