President Akufo-Addo urged the Supreme Court to dismiss the election petition filed by NDC 2020 flag bearer John Dramani Mahama.
Mr. Akufo-Addo says the petition arose out of a baseless imagination.
The leader of the NDC is before the Apex Court asking it to overturn the election results which saw Akufo-Addo declared president.
He maintains that Mr. Akufo-Addo took advantage of arithmetic and ballot-filling errors.
Akufo-Addo, Prempeh, and Co, a law firm founded by the president, subsequently filed a 12-page response on behalf of the president.
The president, through the cabinet, argues that the petition reveals no attack on the validity of the election held at 38,622 polling stations across the country.
He describes the allegation of ballot filling involving some 6,622 votes as empty and insignificant to materially affect the outcome of the election.
The cabinet noted that Mr Mahama’s petition did not disclose how many votes he should have received, except pointing out that none of the candidates got more than 50% of the votes cast.
The petition is then described as “purely conjectural and born of an unfounded imagination”.
This, the president said through the cabinet, as Mr. Mahama in his petition argues that if all the votes of Techiman South constituency are added to his votes, NPP’s Akufo-Addo will get less than 50% plus 1 of the votes. votes cast.
Mr. Akufo-Addo, in his response, notes that Techiman South’s results were known to Mr. Mahama at the time of his petition.
Those votes, says Akufo-Addo, if credited to each candidate will reveal that he or she duly obtained more than 50% of the votes cast.
Mr. Akufo-Addo’s lawyers have notified a first objection to the petition.
This objection will be to argue that the petition does not meet the requirement of Article 64 (1) of the Constitution.
This article states: “The validity of the election of the president can only be challenged by a Ghanaian citizen who can petition the Supreme Court to this effect within twenty-one days after the declaration of the election result to the Supreme Court. respect for which the petition is presented.
The President concluded by describing the petition as incompetent, frivolous and vexatious.
