NDC’s decision to disregard Akufo-Addo as ‘lawless and disrespectful’ president – NPP

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) says that the refusal of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to recognize Nana Akufo-Addo as president of Ghana is a sign of anarchy.

The NDC has argued that until the Supreme Court clears President Akufo-Addo of any wrongdoing, the party will not respect him.

This is part of the actions taken by NDC to protest against the outcome of the general election which they claim was rigged.

The general secretary of the party, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah during a press briefing in Accra on Friday January 8, 2021, said: “Notwithstanding Akufo-Addo’s inauguration as president of Ghana, the NDC will not recognize Mr. Akufo-Addo as the legitimate president of the Republic of Ghana before all the problems surrounding its flawed election are satisfactorily resolved.

But NPP communications director Yaw Buaben Asamoa insisted the president has been constitutionally sworn in and should therefore be treated as such.

According to him, Ghanaian democracy resides with Ghanaians and not with the NDC or any other political party

So he insisted that the Ghanaians had made up their minds and no one could do anything about it.

“The President has been appropriately invested in the House of Parliament before the President and sworn in by the Chief Justice. This is what the Ghanaian people have decreed through Ghana’s legal processes and yet the opposition party in the country, through their leadership, is challenging these institutions to undermine the constitution of the Republic.

“It is their choice, and it does not change the fact or change the value of what we have done because the value of democracy still resides in the people of Ghana and not in the leadership of the NDC. Their comments are completely reckless, which does not represent the views of Ghanaians and not even the whole of the NDC as a political party. In any case, the NDC is part of the processes in which they participated in the elections and the lack of constitutional respect is anarchy. ”

The NDC did not accept the result of the 2020 general election, alleging wrongdoing at the polls.

Mr. Mahama filed a election petition before a court seeking, among other things, a declaration by the Supreme Court that “the alleged declaration of the results of the 2020 presidential election on December 9, 2020 is unconstitutional, null and void and without any effect.”
