A political science professor at the University of Ghana has advised NPP caucus leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, to keep his choice of words in mind when dealing with Haruna Iddrisu of the NDC.
Professor Ransford Gyampo said the structure of the current Parliament gives the National Democratic Congress (NDC) some influence over the New Patriotic Party and the ruling government.
The political speaker explained that the reason for his caution is that the NPP will at some point need the approval of some NDC MPs in the decision-making process.
This percentage of approval, he explained, can only be achieved with the help of Haruna Iddrisu.
That, he said, should be reason enough for Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, who has been proposed as head of the next parliament, to tone down his “overly partisan comments” in the future.
“With respect, I think Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu may instead be living in dreamland if he doesn’t learn the rubrics of conciliation in his statements and comments in response to Iddrisu Haruna’s ‘provocations’.
“This, added to the unprecedented attitude of Ghanaians voters to ensure that parliament remains what it is likely to be, in the coming days, should make him approach his overly partisan comment with some trepidation. in the future, “said Professor Ransford Gyampo.
He argued that the controversies surrounding the 8th Legislature and the fact that the NPP and NDC have 137 seats in the Legislative Chamber does not place the NPP in the majority.
The addition of NPP’s plan to rely on MP Fomena to form a majority in the next Parliament, does not hold any volume.
“Osei-Kyei-Mensah should know that according to our constitutional arrangement, the MP from Fomena constituency is not a member of the NPP, although he can choose to vote with them.
“Take a second look at the definition of what a Hung Parliament is. The definition focuses on political parties and not on independent candidates, ”said Professor Gyampo.
