Weeds take control of basic schools in the West region

Weeds have now invaded the complexes of some base schools in the western region following the long shutdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

During this time, some of the school blocks have developed serious cracks on them.

Barely a week before the reopening, the situation in some schools visited by the Ghana News Agency showed no signs of readiness for the resumption of school activities, with classrooms still locked with rodents and debris. and the compounds left in disorder.

Many of the schools that have ongoing projects have stuck with structures and some of the building materials left at the mercy of the weather while the remaining materials have been covered in weeds.

Some of the schools visited include the Agona Methodist Cluster in Ahanta West Municipality which was a voting center for the recent general election, Anaji MA Basic School and Effiakuma Methodist Primary and JHS in Municipality of Effia-Kwesimintsim.

Others are Bedu-Addo Methodist Primary and JHS, Woode Methodist Primary, Wiawso Road Key Primary, Bishop Essuan Primary and JHS, St John Paul School and the cluster of schools near Bompeh Senior High School, all in Sekondi Metropolis -Takoradi.

School parks which until now were used by community members for training and other activities like funerals and durbars were no longer only churches that had their services in classrooms can no longer do so. due to a ban on using the facilities, leaving the fields bushy. and messy classrooms respectively.

Many of the schools visited had their classrooms filled with cobwebs, rodents and feces as well as reptiles like wall geckos and lizards.

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in infections and deaths around the world, and in Ghana, as schools have moved from holding in-person classes to virtual learning.

The president announced the indefinite closure of all schools, effective Monday, March 16, and the ban on mass gatherings as part of the COVID-19 containment measures.

President Akufo-Addo, in his address to the nation on January 3, 2021, to take stock of the COVID-19 pandemic, announced the reopening of all public and private basic schools, junior high, high school, second cycle of secondary and higher education across the country from this month of January.

The reopening for children of kindergarten, primary and first cycle, in private and public schools, will be back to school, while all students of SHS 1 will start classes from March 10, every students embarking on a one-track academic calendar.

SHS 2 and SHS 3 will however return to school from January 18th.

Meanwhile, SHS 3 students from all schools will no longer work with the dual track system due to the expansion of infrastructure in the various high schools over the past three years.
