Jermaine Fowler, who stars in the upcoming Coming 2 America as Eddie Murphy’s son Akeem, said his audition involved a 45-minute barbecue chat.
Jermaine Fowler, one of the stars of the upcoming comedy sequel Coming 2 America, admitted that his audition for the film involved discussing the barbecue for 45 minutes with film director Craig Brewer. Fowler is a newcomer to feature films, debuting in 2018, acclaimed Sorry to bother you.
The latest addition to Coming to America The series comes more than 30 years after the first film arrived in 1988. At the time, Eddie Murphy was riding many box office successes, and the arrival of Coming to America only added to this praise. And while the movie wasn’t the most financially successful, it was always one of the most memorable for fans. That’s why the sequel, which arrives in March, has so far been filled with anticipation. Continuing to play out the story of the fish out of the water that lay at the center of the first film, the sequel involves a return to New York City for Akeem (Murphy) and his loyal sidekick Semmi. This time, the two Zamundans are looking for the rightful heir to the throne of the fictional African nation in Akeem’s illegitimate son, Lavelle (Fowler).

Finding the right actor to play Akeem’s son was essential for Coming 2 America. There’s certainly no shortage of talented comedic actors who would be more than willing to star alongside iconics like Murphy and Hall, but the role was given to Fowler after auditioning for Brewer. Exactly what it was about Fowler who ended up landing it, best left the role to Brewer to define it, but in an interview with THAT ONE, Fowler made the audition process fairly low-key, with a 45-minute barbecue conversation taking priority:
“I’m laughing because it’s still crazy. My first audition, Craig and I sat in a room and talked about barbecuing for 45 minutes. At one point we said goodbye to each other, then we thought, I have an audition. “
The role of Lavelle sounds great, with a lot of comedic potential. For starters, he lives in Queens with his mother, played by Leslie Jones, and his uncle Reem (Tracy Morgan). Both SNL the elders will certainly add a lot of humor to what is already likely to be a hilarious premise. Since the majority of the new film would take place in Zamunda, the sequel seeks to reverse the fish-out-of-water element that the first film used. This time, it will be Lavelle’s turn to adjust to a whole new world, apparently, that of life in Africa.
It would be reductive to call Fowler’s audition easy, but at the same time, a 45-minute conversation about something as casual as a barbecue is probably not a relatable audition story for most actors. who work. Yet history shows that Brewer felt confident from the start that he had found the right fit for the role of Lavelle. It remains to be seen how well all the comic elements come together for Coming 2 America, but a comfortable and pleasant working environment can indeed work wonders for a movie.
