Uganda probes large-scale fish kills in Lake Victoria

Ugandan authorities are investigating the large-scale fish deaths on Lake Victoria, the continent’s largest freshwater lake.

The Fisheries Department has warned the public not to eat the dead fish and bury them.

It is not yet known what quantities have washed up on the banks. But photos shared on social media by people living around the lake show dozens of lifeless fish washed up ashore.

The Nile perch, a species of fish weighing up to over 100 kilograms, which is a staple food in many Ugandan households, is the most affected.

A statement from the National Environmental Management Authority says the deaths can be caused by low oxygen levels.

The species is said to be sensitive to oxygen levels below two milligrams per liter of water.

Additional investigations are underway, authorities said.

The lake is a vital resource shared between Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania.
