The Anambra state government has postponed reopening of schools in the state for two weeks after the rise of COVID-19 in the state
State Governor Willie Obiano said it on Tuesday in his broadcast to the people of the state.
The governor has also banned any gatherings exceeding 50 people in the state, while threatening to shut down any market that violates COVID-19 protocols.
He said decisions had become necessary in the wake of the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic which was “sweeping the world”.
He said: “Unfortunately, it seems our warnings have fallen on deaf ears. Our people have let themselves be carried away by the joys of Christmas and have failed to maintain COVID-19 protocols.
Obiano added that the state had faced a clear and current danger, adding that between December 7, 2020 and January 11, 2021, the state recorded 110 new cases of COVID-19.
Part of the governor’s speech read: “My administration has made a series of difficult decisions to stem the further spread of this pandemic before it takes a serious advantage over us.
“All government offices must adhere to standard COVID-19 protocols – hand washing on entry, wearing face masks, regular use of hand sanitizers, and strict respect for social distancing. No one will be allowed to enter government premises without properly wearing a face mask.
“No one should leave their home without wearing a face mask.
“The ban on nightclubs is still firmly in place. Hotels are required to ensure strict adherence to COVID-19 protocols.
“There shouldn’t be more than 50 people in a public gathering.
“COVID-19 action teams in all of our 61 markets must ensure full compliance with standard COVID-19 protocols.
“All markets in Anambra State have one week to implement the necessary safety standards and ensure their compliance. Any market that does not meet the standards after a week will be quickly closed.
“Carriers are invited to go back to all the practices that helped us during the first wave of the pandemic. They must ensure social distancing inside vehicles and maintain a passenger manifesto.
“The schools in Anambra will not reopen on January 18, 2021, as previously planned. On the contrary, schools will reopen in two weeks from today to allow principals and teachers to prepare for the return of our children.
“Churches and other faith-based organizations are invited to form action teams and return to the practices that helped us in the first phase of the pandemic.
“For the sake of emphasis, no one should go to any market, public place, church, school, enter transportation, attend functions as stated above without properly wearing a face mask.”
