There has been speculation that Adwoa Safo may not have voted for the professor because Oquaye worked to have her son challenge her for the post of NPP Dome Kwabenya parliamentary candidate.
“It is claimed that I voted against Professor Oquaye because he [Prof Oquaye] allowed his son to introduce me to the recent parliamentary primaries at the nuclear power plant’s Dome Kwabenya in the run-up to the 2020 general elections. How absurd!
“I want to emphatically state that, there is no iota of truth in these vile rumors and speculations, and I call on everyone to ignore the same thing altogether. For the avoidance of doubt, I wish to state without a shadow of a doubt that I, Sarah Adwoa Safo, voted for Professor Mike Oquaye, ”she said.
She said she remained a staunch member of the party by supporting every decision of the party and that voting for Professor Oquaye was in line with her principles. Read the full statement below;
My attention has been drawn to rumors and wild speculation on major media and social media suggesting that I, Sarah Adwoa Safo, voted against NPP candidate Professor Mike Oquaye for President in the last sitting of the 7th legislature at dawn on January 7, 2021.
It is claimed that I voted against Professor Oquaye because he [Prof Oquaye] allowed his son to introduce me to the recent parliamentary primaries at the nuclear power plant’s Dome Kwabenya in the run-up to the 2020 general elections. How absurd!
I want to emphatically state that, there is no iota of truth in these vile rumors and speculations, and I call on everyone to ignore the same thing altogether. For the avoidance of doubt, I would like to state without a shadow of a doubt that I, Sarah Adwoa Safo, voted for Professor Mike Oquaye.
I had absolutely no motivation to vote otherwise. During the more than 20 years of my active political life, I have always defended and publicly supported the decisions of my party, the NPP. My unquenchable loyalty and commitment to the NPP over the decades certainly cannot be shaken by ordinary internal party challenge. At every stage of my parliamentary political life, I have been challenged, and at no time have I missed my comrades.
While it is true that since 2007, I have been competing in the Dôme Kwabenya for the parliamentary primaries of the party, it is undeniable that, whatever the result of each competition, I have never hesitated to put my time and my resources at the disposal of the party to ensure that Dome Kwabenya remains our traditional post election stronghold.
Moreover, as a fervent supporter of our democratic principles, which is one of the founding principles of the NPP, I never and will never be able to hold a grudge against one or more people who challenge me in our party’s primaries. So it seems to me not only blatant, but also utterly unacceptable for anyone to suggest that I would betray my party simply because I was challenged in the party’s recent parliamentary primaries.
Beyond that, it should also be remembered that I contributed to the debate on the floor during this special session, making a solid argument for the party’s candidate, Professor Mike Oquaye, to be re-elected as President of the august room.
Instructively, I was the only female Member of Parliament to speak for the party candidate on this faithful day. Having pleaded for the re-election of Professor Mike Oquaye as President, what would be my motivation to vote against him? This, certainly, begs belief.
Moreover, as the deputy leader of the outgoing majority and member for three terms, I am aware of the devastating consequences of not having the Speaker on the side of the ruling party. So I could not have envisioned putting my party and my government in such an uncomfortable and dire situation by voting against the party’s candidate for president.
Despite the wickedness of these malicious allegations against myself, I remain resolute and focused on my work as a member of the august house serving my constituents, my party and of course the government of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo -Addo by bringing prosperity to the Ghanaian people.
