The government is committed to addressing the concerns of the Union of Teachers and Education Workers (TEWU).
This follows a nationwide strike declared by the union on Wednesday.
The members’ industrial action aimed to demand better conditions of service from the government.
TEWU says it cannot understand that for nearly two years the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission has not been able to finalize questions about its terms of service, as members continue to work in situations very difficult.
The national action sparked an emergency meeting called by the Fair Wages and Wages Commission, TEWU and the government represented by the Ministry of Finance, Education and Labor.
At the end of the interviews, it was agreed that a job reassessment would be carried out for those TEWU members who are at imminent danger in relation to the issue of risk pay.
The issue of promotions was also highlighted during the meeting. A joint statement said that the Vice-Chancellors’ Secretariat of Ghana (VCG) is expected to convene a meeting of HR managers with TEWU leadership by Friday, January 15, 2021.
“That in pursuing this agreement, the VCG Secretariat should make the relevant documents relating to the matter available to TEWU leaders before Friday,” the statement said.
Consensus was also reached that consultations will take place with the government on matters relating to non-essential allowances.
“On the issue of the non-basic allowance, consultations would be held with the government on the emergency certificate and the result communicated to TEWU as soon as possible,” the statement added.
